It is commonly known that children learn better and achieve more in school when their needs are met. Children at school have not only educational needs, but also physical, spiritual, social and emotional needs. Needs in one area affect functioning in other areas. As your school counselor, my job is to assist our students' learning and spiritual formation by supporting them in social and emotional areas. Here are some ways I help students: • Learn how to get along with others and make friends • Learn to identify and express feelings • Learn how to cope with problems and stress • Learn how to resolve conflicts Another part of my job is supporting and working with staff and parents. Please feel free to contact me--I'm here for you! Something for Parents . . . Friday mornings we have a time for parents to discuss a variety of topics, receive support, and share resources. Upcoming topics: • Passing on Your Values to Your Children • Knowing When Your Child Needs Help • Divorce and Stepfamilies • Your Child's Self-Esteem • Helping Children Understand Grief and Death March Tip: Is your child having difficulty making or keeping friends? Is he or she bothered by bullies? Or is your child the one stuck with a bad reputation? One of the best books I’ve found that helps parents to help their kids about all things relating to friends is Good Friends Are Hard to Find by Fred Frankel, PhD (Perspective Publishing 1996).
