"Kind words do not cost much. Yet they accomplish much." - Blaise Pascal ![]()
Dear Parents, I am looking forward to working with your eager first graders this upcoming year. You can help me make this a successful year for them by becoming involved with your child’s learning. Your child has brought twelve (12) folders to school. Eleven (11) will be kept in his/her desk for class work and the other one is his/her "Take Home Folder". Please clearly print your child’s name and the words Take Home on this folder. This folder will be taken home every day (even if it is empty). Please check your child’s Take Home folder each day. In the Take Home folder your child will bring home completed work and/or homework papers. Anything that has not been completed is a homework paper. Completed papers should be kept at home and homework papers should be returned the next school day. You will know for certain that a page is complete if I have stamped it or marked it with a “C” for corrected. Also, sometimes I might ask that you sign a paper and return it. This is one of the ways that I can communicate with you about your child’s progress. Your first grader’s homework is to read with an adult each day. (Reading alone is wonderful, but it does not count as homework). This means that your child can read to you, you can read to your child, or you can take turns reading to each other. Also, please help your child to study addition and subtraction facts for numbers 1 through 12, for about ten minutes every day. Math flash cards can help with this and they can be bought or made. I have sent home handwriting models to help your child practice handwriting. Please make sure that he/she holds the pencil correctly. Thank you for your help and cooperation. May God bless you and your family. Sincerely, Mrs. Carnevali First Grade Teacher ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Classroom and Bulletin Board Pictures ![]() Dear Parents, School builds upon the foundations that you, as a parent, have built in your child’s life at home. Each new school year should be a fresh and exciting experience for both children and their parents. The following are suggestions for helping your child at home to be successful at school: Ensure that your child gets sufficient sleep. First grade children need to be in bed by 8:00 each night. Pay attention to nutritional needs. Listen to your child, and learn to know him/her as a unique individual. help him/her to cope with emotions. Schedule regular homework time together. During this time check your child’s folder for completed work and important papers. Go over your child’s papers together. Make sure that your child comes to school every day, unless ill, and arrives on time. Demonstrate that education is a priority. Acknowledge effort as well as success. Praising your child’s efforts will reinforce learning. Discipline lovingly and consistently. Give home responsibilities. Don’t compare your child with other children. All children develop differently. Recognize your child’s unique talents and abilities. Time spent in front of the television should be limited. Choose programs that are appropriate for your child. Read books, go to the library, and play educational games. Take your child places. Visits to museums, farms, factories, galleries, nature and science centers, and parks will provide exciting new learning opportunities. Give opportunities for your child to think for him/herself, and to make decisions. Discuss the decision. I hope these suggestions are helpful to you. You have a tremendous and far-reaching influence on your child. You can make the difference.
