Holy Family Grade School Kindergarten 400 South Louise Street Glendale, CA 91205 818-243-9239 ext. 414 July 2010 Dear Kindergarten Family, Summer is going by so quickly. It is hard to believe that we will be starting classes in just a few weeks. Even if your child has attended preschool, coming into a traditional classroom is sometimes overwhelming. The day is long and being unfamiliar with the schedule can take a child awhile to adjust. Do not be surprised if your child does not like school at first. Together we can help your child get through. If at all possible please bring your child’s school supplies to school before the first day. As you can imagine there is a lot of work involved in putting things away. It makes things much more manageable if it is done beforehand. The office is open from 7:30—4:00 each week day. Someone there will help you with the supplies. I am enclosing an additional copy of the supplies list. On the first day of school bring your child straight to the classroom. Please do not arrive too early because waiting tends to make the children nervous or upset. An arrival of about 7:50 AM is perfect. When the 8:00 AM bell rings we will go outside as a class for the Welcome assembly. When the assembly is over you are welcome to come into the classroom for a few minutes to take pictures, videos etc and wish your child a great day. After the assembly there will be coffee and donuts for the parents. If your schedule allows please stop and meet the Parent Guild Officers and other parents in the school. 10:00 AM is nutrition break for the school. Your child will need to bring a snack everyday to eat at that time. We recommend something with high nutritional value. Cut up fresh fruit or vegetables, yogurt, cheese and crackers, a ½ sandwich are always good choices. Although it is permissible to send chips or cookies for lunch time, please do not send it as a snack. Drinks should be milk, water or 100% fruit juice drinks. If your child is going to attend after care it is important that you send sufficient snacks for the afternoon. They are usually ravenous. Always be sure to pack a bottle of water for your child. In hot weather it is impossible to get enough water from the fountain. Children need to be in uniform the first day of school. School shoes must be all white or all black. No logos or designs, no high tops. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT ALL OF YOUR CHILD’S BELONGINGS ARE MARKED WITH HIS/HER NAME IN PERMANENT MARKER. If it is lost because it doesn’t have a name on it, then it’s probably gone forever. And that can get very expensive. I ask parents every year if they can contribute to our “prize box”. If you can donate to us the prizes and little toys that accumulate in your house from McDonald or Burger King we will be set. Do not go out and buy things. Your child is not allowed to have in his/her possession and type of medication. Tylenol etc. is considered medication as are cough drops, or throat lozenges. If your child must be given medicine during the school day a signed note must be provided by the doctor authorizing the medicine and the dosage. You may pick up the correct forms in the office. I hope the rest of your summer is delightful. Mrs. Castillo,Mrs. Nelson and I are looking forward to seeing you. These will be returned to you at the end of the school year. Do not send any items that have not been requested. ![]() Although the school has an adequate quantity of supplies in case of a natural disaster, we feel that a child would be comforted to have something of his/her own. Each child should bring the following items to school. They will be stored for use in case of an earthquake or other emergency. They will be returned to you at the end of the school year. These items are in addition to those requested on the supply list. All of these items should fit into a gallon size zip-lock baggie. Please mark the bag with your child’s name and grade. • A pair of socks • A set of underwear • A change of pants ( do not need to be uniform pants) • A 16.9 oz. Bottle of water (no larger) • A personal size box of raisins (not a large box) • A granola or energy bar ( 1 bar-not a package) • A family picture (something familiar to the child) • A personal note of reassurance from you. The note should say that you know that he/she may be frightened but that they will be taken care of at the school. And that you will be there as soon as you can to pick him/her up. This note will come home again in the family envelope in September. It will be for the rest of the school. You will not need to do this again. ![]() ![]() BIRTHDAYS We love to have birthdays in the Kindergarten! We will try to make your child feel very special on his/her birthday. The school has very specific rules concerning what may be brought to school for a birthday. You may provide cupcakes or cookies for the class if you wish. We are not allowed to pass out goodie bags or other foods. If you are sending out invitations to a birthday party we will put the invitations in your child's folder. Do not have your child pass out invitations. Please ask if you have any questions about birthdays! | Kindergarten | Grade 1 | Grade 2 | Grade 3 | Grade 4 | Grade 5 | Grade 6 | Grade 7 | Grade 8 | Learning Center | Art | Music | Full Focus | Physical Education | Staff | Reading - Grades 4 & 5 | | Personnel Administration | Faculty and Staff | | Return Home | Administration and Faculty | About HFGS | 2010-2011 Calendar | Parents Guild | Information & Services | Alumni Registration | Parents' Corner | |
