Reading - Grades 4 & 5 Ms. Katharine Huntley  "The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention." - Unknown  Dear 4th and 5th Grade Parents, I’m delighted to teach your children reading this school year. Through a wide variety of creative and intellectual activities, students will develop proficiency in the areas of word analysis, fluency, and systematic vocabulary development; reading comprehension; literary response and analysis; listening and speaking strategies and applications. Writing strategies, applications, and written and oral language conventions taught by Mrs. Chatterton and Mrs. Rogers will be reinforced as well. The time period will be comprised of independent reading, shared reading, and read aloud: all with the aim of developing critical thinking skills for application to quality literature and real world experiences. Literature units will include Traditional Tales, Author Ouevre (E.L. Konigsburg, Beverly Cleary), Fiction (realistic, historic, humorous, fantasy, mystery, adventure, science), Non-Fiction (autobiography/biography, news media), Poetry, and Plays. The 4th and 5th grades will visit The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in January; the 5th Grade will participate in Shakespeare Live! at the Glendale Center Theatre in April. Both classes will perform on stage in June. Details to follow... In community news, you and your child may be interested in the book clubs at your local library. A book discussion group for parents and children in grades 4-8 meets the third Wednesday of each month in the Children’s Room at Glendale’s Central Library; there is also a 4th & 5th Grade Book Club at the Burbank Library branches www.BurbankLibrary.com.
