Mrs. Nelson
Dear Kindergarten Family,
My name is Mrs. Teresa Nelson. I am very excited to be working with your child this coming school year as their Kindergarten teacher. I am an alumna of both Holy Family Grade School and Holy Family High School, and have been the physical education teacher here for the past eleven years. I feel blessed to be a part of this school community, and look forward to working with you as partners in your child’s education.
It is hard to believe that we will be starting classes in just a few weeks. Even if your child has attended preschool, coming into a traditional classroom is sometimes overwhelming. The day is long and being unfamiliar with the schedule can take a child awhile to adjust. Do not be surprised if your child does not like school at first. Together we can help your child get through.
If at all possible please bring your child’s school supplies to school before the first day. As you can imagine there is a lot of work involved in putting things away. It makes things much more manageable if it is done beforehand. The office is open from 7:30—4:00 each week day. Someone there will help you with the supplies.
On the first day of school bring your child straight to the classroom. Please do not arrive too early because waiting tends to make the children nervous or upset. An arrival of about 7:50 AM is perfect. When the 8:00 AM bell rings we will go outside as a class for the Welcome assembly. When the assembly is over you are welcome to come into the classroom for a few minutes to take pictures, videos etc and wish your child a great day.
After the assembly there will be coffee and donuts for the parents.
If your schedule allows please stop and meet the officers of the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and other parents in the school.
10:00 AM is nutrition break for the school. Your child will need to bring a snack everyday to eat at that time. We recommend something with high nutritional value. Cut up fresh fruit or vegetables, yogurt, cheese and crackers, or a half sandwich are always good choices. Although it is permissible to send chips or cookies for lunch time, please do not send
it as a snack. Drinks should be white milk or water.
If your child is going to attend after care it is important that you
send sufficient snacks for the afternoon. They are usually ravenous. Always be sure to pack a bottle of water for your child.
In hot weather it is impossible to get enough water from the fountain.
Children need to be in uniform the first day of school. School shoes must be all white or all black. No logos or designs, no high tops. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT ALL OF YOUR CHILD’S BELONGINGS ARE MARKED WITH HIS/HER NAME IN PERMANENT MARKER. If it is lost because it doesn’t have a name on it, then it’s probably gone forever. And that can get very expensive.
I am asking parents if they can contribute to our “prize box”. If you can donate to us the prizes and little toys that accumulate in your house from McDonald or Burger King we will be set. Do not go out and buy things.
If your child has a fever he/she cannot come to school and must be fever free for a full 24 hours before returning to school. Your child is not allowed to have in his/her possession and type of medication. Tylenol etc. is considered medication as are cough drops, or throat lozenges.
If your child must be given medicine during the school day a signed note must be provided by the doctor authorizing the medicine and the dosage. You may pick up the correct forms in the office.
We will go over all of this information again at Back to School Night on September 7th, so please do not worry if you can’t remember everything.
I hope the rest of your summer is delightful and restful. Mrs. Castillo and I look forward to seeing you and beginning a fun and growth filled year together.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Teresa Nelson
